Judge's comments: This work requires one to work and to engage with it.
A cube of discarded work clothes, boots, money all glued together - simultaneously chaotic, organised, in one place, but unusable…
Whose are they? Why are they like this? Will they need them again? What sort of work did they do? These questions and more.
This is an intriguing work which poses more questions than it answers.
Artist’s Statement: "A labour" is not a sculpture. It is a life. Despite the fact it has the clothing of Australian workers, it portrays the life of workers around the world. It illustrates all the changes in body, mind and emotions. It shows all the hidden stories about unknown families, the dreams, friendships, pain, acheivements, and all the ups and downs. "A labour" is an idea, may change something in you. It is a feeling, goes through you. It is a thing you can touch, smell, imagine, and maybe live. It is a life which belongs to someone, including you.
