   Sculpture Description

These sculptures explore the feeling of sinking. The moments in life where you feel as though you could simply stop and disappear, sink into the earth and cease existing or to exist elsewhere. They are representative of when time and life seemed to both slow and speed up all at once. These pieces are also inspired by the materiality of bronze, with its paradoxical blend of solidity and liquidity. I wanted to push the material to appear soft and liquid but also employ the sturdiness of the material to support the delicate structural shapes of these sculptures. The balance between these themes is further represented in the balancing element of ‘Descending’. Though It isn’t obvious from looking at it, the figure in this sculpture is balancing on the point of the spiked stand. To me each figure represents a different will. While the male figure willingling melts and wishes to disappear it is thrust up into the world, unable to wholy melt away. While the female figure reaches out to remain here while being pulled down into oblivion. Both figures fighting for what the other wishes to lose. These works represent the struggle between presence and absence, solidity and dissolution.
