   Sculpture Description

The idea of the semi-recognisable has interested me in the making of this sculpture. Two horizontal strips are bent to abstractedly represent human profiles, with another vertical metal strip joining and relating the profiles. This sculpture attempts to reflect the beauty of the human outline, and its graceful interactions with other profiles. Abstracting the figurative, I believe, is an area that sculpture can most deeply describe the nature of our perceptions. These simple profiles when combined create a partly organic, a partly mechanical form. This inorganic, mechanical facet is also explored through the materiality of the sculpture. Constructed with black steel, I have contrasted the extremes of the raw material by weathering it whilst also grinding down the sides to the fresh and shinny steel core, which in turn also emphasises the key feature of the profiles. The rusted appearance was chosen because it is reminiscent of where this material is from. It mirrors the colour of Australia.
