   Sculpture Description

The sticks form a shape of a nest. The rough arrangement creates a home. This home is a safe haven for nurturing and observing. The sticks represent building blocks of an environment we use to shelter in. I find the act of collecting meditative and the construction of a nest shape brings a holistic sense of wellbeing. Branches, sticks and twigs are sourced from my immediate surroundings, from deserted beaches or my back paddock. Firstly, sticks, branches and twigs are sorted into groups from biggest to smallest. The assembling of the sizes is a critical part of the construction. This process is particularly precarious as the shape takes form, it might collapse or I don’t like the way it is forming, I start again, to make sure the foundation branches are placed correctly and strong enough to withhold the weight and often predetermines the overall profile. (Some nest shapes have a broad wide opening, funnel, long pipe shapes, tall and eagle-shape nest, untidy and spontaneous). I have always been interested in natural ephemera and assemblage in landscape. From nests to wire vessels I develop work that can be swept away as quickly as it can be constructed. The weather often dictates decision making upon the timeframes and shapes of these assemblages and reflect my deep connection with Cape Bridgewater.
