Ten years ago my interest in stone carving was inspired by a visit to Oamaru in the South Island of New Zealand. There I saw marvellous sculptures in the local limestone. On my return I located a source for Mt Gambier limestone and developed my own style incorporating the environment of mountains and sea so close to my heart. The challenge this soft stone throws at you stimulates lateral thinking processes: some creations alter considerably due to ancient shells appearing or simply cracking away, leaving a gaping hole. I
prefer to let the work develop from a basic drawing or idea and then let the 3D appearance guide the shapes as they appear. Each piece of work is unique and cannot be repeated.
