Growing apples

Two forms run through my work - the apple and the female figure - recognisable symbols that exist in cultures throughout the world. Sustainability, consumption and the relationship between people interest me. "Growing Apples" grew from an idea about genetic modification of our heritage food supply ? I have combined ephemeral and long lasting materials, (small apple crocheted, using strands from plastic fly screen, leaf made from an aluminium can and the wire(y) tree covered in poly-filler, large apple is gypsum, petri dish is glass). Apple symbolises knowledge, immortality, redemption, temptation, the fall of man into sin, and sin itself, it represents mythical Avalon, also the fruit of the underworld.
