Monique is one of my “Warburtonians” - a collection of sculptures of local people from Warburton - my home town. Carved with a chainsaw and hand tools from reclaimed local cypress, these three-dimensional sculptures represent a gathering of local people central to my life during the multiple lockdowns experienced by her community during the pandemic.
Judges' comments on awarding the Art Almanac subscription prize:
Quirky, carved rendering of wonderful everyday characters. Sense of person and humour in depiction. A contemporary work using traditional methods. An inhabitant of nature and urban folklore standing proud looking into the distance….and maybe the future.
