Description

‘Little Frog. Big Climb’ holds a serious message, joyfully inspired by the nightly chorus of frogs near my workshop, this piece celebrates the beauty and fragility of our natural world. Hand carved from a gifted piece of Huon pine that had been untouched for decades, this sculpture symbolises hope amidst climate crisis. The frog’s climb represents the daunting but essential efforts needed to address environmental care. Technically, this beautiful timber demanded a carving that worked to its strengths, a visually simple piece allowing the column of timber to hold natural beauty and the frog carved into it, to tell a story. Carved with traditional gouges I also used the Japanese Ukibori technique for the frog’s raised bumps; carve, compress bumps (with a knitting needle!), carve flush and steam…the bumps pop up as if by magic!

Judge's Comments for the Art Almanac Prize:

Yet another example of superb craftsmanship in this work. I enjoyed the simple little story of this little guy's journey. The work is joyful but has lots of tension and energy
