Based in Woodend for 20 years, my current body of work is inspired the awe my daughters and I feel during winter hikes on ‘the mount’ (Mt Macedon). The myriad fungi and lichen, a plethora of forms and colours impossible to fully describe and some so beautiful they don’t seem real. After of 3 years of ‘shrooming’ in my studio there is still so much more I wish to explore and create. Creating in polymer clay enables me to physically sculpt colour - no paint, just minutely detailed sculpting of colour. I really wanted to capture the natural scatter pattern of the mushrooms that at at first glance seem random but are governed by chaos theory fractals. The fascination is endless in sculpting these patterns -- knowing if it the patterns are right they appear "just natural" - but get it wrong and the viewer always knows.
