2014 Annual & Awards Exhibition
Exhibition description

For many years the Association of Sculptors of Victoria Annual and Awards Exhibition was held in public places in the city. The idea was that people would come upon it rather than having to go to a gallery. We had shows at the Rialto, 161 Collins Street, the AMP building and the Telstra Building. After a time foyer space became hard to find and we elected to go out of town – to the Manningham ArtSpace; Montsalvat; the Light Factory, Eltham and the Yarra Sculpture Space. In 2014 we are fortunate to find space in the city – at 120 Collins Street – and look forward to a grand exhibition to celebrate our return.

As well as the members’ general exhibition the Annual Exhibition has two award sections:

In 1985 the Association recognized its own members’ work by awarding the William Hoggan Thomas Memorial Award, donated by member Mrs. Margaret Gunnersen Thomas in memory of her husband. Following Margaret Gunnersen’s death in 2007 the prize became the Margaret Gunnersen and William Hoggan Thomas Award. The judging of this prize is one of Margaret's creative contributions to the arts: it was to be decided by the vote of the full (as opposed to associate) members of the Association who, at the time, were admitted to membership after establishing their credentials as practising sculptors. Over the years eligibility to enter and to vote for this prize has varied in an effort to remain true to Margaret's original intentions. Thus in 2014 entry is open to, and the prize is voted on, by member sculptors with greater than ten years’ exhibition experience. In all it is considered by our members to be the greatest accolade as it is the sum of the opinions of their peers, colleagues and competitors.

The Tina Wentcher Sculpture Prize was a bequest commenced in 1976 as an encouragement to emerging sculptors younger than 35 years. This age requirement was changed in 2007 to reflect the age of many emerging artists and the Prize is now open to sculptors with fewer than ten years’ exhibition experience. The prize is offered on alternate years - taking turns with the Andor Meszaros Memorial Prize.

The judging panel for the Tina Wentcher Sculpture Prize comprises one external judge, the president of the Association of Sculptors of Victoria and another member of the ASV. This year’s external judge is Sculptor, Geoffrey Bartlett; our member judge is Mark Cowie and President Gillian Govan.

The Exhibition will run from 25th August until 12th September. The exhibition will be opened and the prizes presented on Friday 29th August between 6:00 and 8:00pm by Dr J. Patrick Greene OBE, CEO of Museum Victoria.

The Exhibition is open from 9am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday.
